Litter Control and You – 7 Ways to Prevent Litter

Each year taxpayers in Prince George’s County pay thousands of dollars for litter cleanup. While none of us like to think of litter control as a personal problem, it is. If you live in the County, whether you pay taxes on the money you earn or the money you spend in the County, or are a dependent or student here, litter is your problem. Whether we create litter by poorly managing our home, personal or workplace trash, or contribute to littered conditions by permitting trash to lay on public areas, litter affects us. CCCC’s 7 plus one basic ways to keep Prince George’s County clean:

  • Pedestrians - Hold litter in your hand or pocket until you reach a proper receptacle.
  • Motorists - Use car litter bags. Don’t forget to place them in trucks too. Empty and reuse the litter bags.
  • Householders - Have enough refuse/trash containers. Load them carefully and keep them tightly covered. Dispose of bulky items during special trash pickups. Keep yards, sidewalks, curbs, alleys, and driveways clean.

An important tip: some ammonia will help keep animals away.

  • Business and apartment building owners/managers - Make sure you have enough refuse containers. Load them carefully and keep them covered. Keep green areas, sidewalks, curbs, alleys, driveways, and loading spaces clean. Set aside some time each day for employees to clean up the exterior of your premises.

  • Supervisors of loading/unloading operations - Provide adequate trash containers. Make sure employees use them. Empty containers when full.

  • Truck drivers - If you haul loose materials, make sure loads are covered.

  • Building/demolition contractors - Provide adequate trash containers at job sites. Make sure that they are used. Empty containers when full.

  • Plus! Use trash/refuse collection services to get rid of extraordinary amounts of trash. Do not dump garbage/trash on public property or on other people’s private property. Don’t create perpetual litter by pushing/sweeping it from one place to another. Instead, pick it up as it accumulates and put a trash can in its place.

Never throw trash out the car window!
