What is Citizens Concerned for a Cleaner
County (CCCC) – and what is its mission?

Citizens Concerned for a Cleaner County (CCCC), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization, was originally created by Prince George’s County Council in 1976 to promote the County’s waste management program. CCCC is a public/private, volunteer-based organization that operates under the direction and guidance of a volunteer Board of Directors and in partnership with Prince George’s County Government, Department of Environmental Resources. CCCC is staffed by a full-time Executive Director who works closely with the board and task force members to plan and implement the "Keep Prince George’s County Beautiful" campaign. It depends on volunteers to assist with office work and in the organization and staffing of community events and outreach activities.

There are four (4) components of CCCC: administrative; educational; outreach; and fundraising. The administrative component of CCCC is responsible for planning and implementing public awareness projects and is funded by County government. Educational and outreach activities and projects, the backbone of the CCCC program, are unfunded.  In 1981, CCCC incorporated as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization so that it would be able to raise funds to sustain the educational and outreach components of the program.
.

CCCC, with the strong support and encouragement of Giant Foods, Inc., became Maryland’s first affiliate of Keep America Beautiful (KAB) in 1995 and began to trade as Keep Prince George’s County Beautiful. CCCC is the state’s only link to KAB, the national, non-profit organization that promotes clean communities as a national affair.

.
We use a number of tools to illustrate the impact of clean communities on the environment. In schools, we use video tapes, slide shows and activity books, etc. to teach the children. When working with civic organizations and business groups, we use litter bags, refrigerator magnets, pens, information brochures, work projects, and other promotional material to raise adult awareness to the importance of clean communities..

The Keep Prince George’s County Beautiful campaign focuses attention on the broken window syndrome, a condition in which blight is permitted to lay on an environment resulting in a perceived invitation to further degrade the area or even invite criminal activity. In 2001, CCCC facilitated a clean business initiative in the Addison Heights business community that resulted in the shutting down of an open-air drug market that had thrived there for years. What did we do? We strategically cleaned up. We can help you do the same thing if your community is blighted, or we can help you develop ways to prevent such environmental deterioration of your community.

The CCCC mission is to involve every county resident and business in a litter reduction, recycling and/or beautification project. We invite you to get involved by calling CCCC’s Executive Director, (301) 883-5843, to request assistance with developing a clean community initiative where you live, learn and work, or to become a member (membership is free).

CCCC is a Keep America Beautiful, Inc. affiliate and is listed in Renew America’s Environmental Success index.
